The Regina Pats were in Swift Current on Saturday for their second game of the regular season. The first was at home to the Broncos and a 7-2 loss. Geordie Maguire scored both Pats goals. On Saturday we learned that defenseman Kyle Burroughs has been named the teams new captain, taking over from Colton Jobke who graduated after last season. Teagan Sacher got the start in goal on Saturday while Chandler Stephenson got into his first game after returning from training camp with the Washington Capitals. Carter Hansen also got into his first game after coming over in a trade from the Moose Jaw Warriors and Carson Samoridny was into the lineup for the first ime as well. The Pats scratches on Saturday were Nick Schneider, Stephen Hak, Trent Ouellette, Max Kammerer, Braden Christoffer, Griffin Mumby, Dexter Bricker and Brady Reagan.
In the first period both teams felt each other out early and we didn't see much in the way of offense. The Broncos got the games first powerplay but the Pats PK came up big and killed it off. Then the Pats turned up the heat starting with a good shift from their fourth line of Austin Wagner, Rylee Zimmer and Carson Samoridny. It continued with another great shift from the top line of Stephenson, Stevenson and Klimchuk and then again from the second line of Brooks, Maguire and Hunt. The Pats drew their first powerplay after that and got the games first goal. Dyson Stevenson tipped home a nice pass from Chandler Stephenson at 13:10 and it was 1-0. Kyle Burroughs got the second assist. The Pats kept the pressure going and had some more scoring chances but Bronco goaltender Landon Bow made some good saves. Then the Broncos turned the tables a bit but Teagan Sacher brought his A game and made some unbelievable stops. The Broncos got a late powerplay and on it would tie the game at 1's as Jake DeBrusk jumped on a loose puck and finished for his 1st WHL goal at the 19:47 mark. Dillon Heatherington and Julius Honka with the assists. As the clock expired a huge scrum ensued in the Pats zone and Pat defenseman Tye Hand dropped the gloves for the second time in as many games. A crazy end to a fantastic first period of hockey. The Pats outshot the Broncos 9-8 in the fame.
In the second the Pats started on the penalty kill as Tye Hand got the extra two minutes after that 1st period ending scrum. The Pats would kill that one off again. Then Julius Honka was skating the puck forward or the righ wing and was absolutely leveled by Dyson Stevenson. Connor Sanvido stepped in to fight and Dyson did not resist. Sanvido would get the 2 minutes for instigating and the Pats went to their second powerplay. On it Chandler Stephenson put home his first of the year on a beautiful shot off the crossbar and in at the 9:18 mark. Morgan Klimchuk and Kyle Burroughs the assist and it was 2-1 Pats. The Broncos would get another powerplay in the frame and had a number of scoring chances but again Teagan Sacher was fantastic making some great saves and keeping his team ahead. The Period would end with the Pats leading 2-1. The Broncos outshot the Pats 12-5 in the frame and led overall 20-14.
In the third the Broncos tied the game on the powerplay at the 1:49 mark as Colby Cave tipped home his first of the season from Brycen Martin and Julius Honka. The Pats got two powerplays of their own after that but were unable to find the tieing goal. Then at the 13:43 mark on another powerplay the Broncos took the lead as Graham Black got his first of the year from Brycen Martin and Julius Honka and it was 3-2. The Pats would pull Sacher late looking for the tieing goal but could not and it was a 3-2 final. The Pats were outshot by the Broncos 12-6 in the third and 32-20 overall. The Pats powerplay went 2 for 4 and the PK went 3 for 6. All 5 goals in the game came on the powerplay. Teagan Sacher made 29 saves on 32 shots in the game while Landon Bow stopped 18 of 20.
The third star of the game went to the Broncos defenseman Brycen Martin who had two assists in the game. The second star went to the Pats Chandler Stephenson who had a goal and an assist in his first game. The games first star went to the Broncos defenseman Julius Honka who picked up 3 assists.
