BRONCOS 7 PATS 2
The Regina Pats opened the WHL regular season against the Swift Current Broncos on Thursday at the Brandt Centre. The Pats were looking to get their season off on the right foot and went with Dawson MacAuley in goal for the game. The Broncos were without their star netminder Eetu Laurikainen who had to return to Finland to take care of some business. They went with 18 year old Landon Bow in net for this one. The Pats got great news on Wednesday that forward Morgan Klimchuk was reassigned by the Calgary Flames and he started the game on the top line along with Adam Brooks and Dryden Hunt. The Pats were 1-3-0-1 against the Broncos in 2012/13 and were looking to turn that around this season starting on Thursday. The Pats scratches were defensemen Stephen Hak, Griffin Mumby and Brady Reagan. Forwards Carter Hansen, Chandler Stephenson, Carson Samoridny, Connor Gay and Dexter Bricker.
In the first period the Pats came out flying and had the majority of the offensive zone time and the scoring chances. Braden Christoffer wasted no time getting his mitts dirty as he dropped the gloves on his first shift with Tanner LeSann. The Blue and White would get the games first powerplay but were unable to find the net. They got the second powerplay as well and just as it expired Geordie Maguire put home his first from Colby Williams and Marc McCoy at 5:25 and it 1-0. The Pats got a third powerplay in the period but were unable to score and the game remained 1-0. Then The Broncos were able to tie the game as LeSann scored on a weird play that went off the inside of the post and in at the 14:24 mark. Andrew Johnson the lone assist and it was 1-1. Then we saw the games second fight as Marc McCoy dropped the gloves with defenseman Brett Lernout. Then the Pats took two penalties and went down 5 on 3. On that powerplay the Broncos took the lead as Brycen Martin got his first from Julius Honka and Coda Gordon at 18:44 and it was 2-1 Swift Current. The Pats outshot the Broncos 12-4 in the frame but trailed 2-1.
In the second period the Broncos made it 3-1 4 on 4. Coda Gordon beat MacAuley for his 1st from Colby Cave at 3:17. Geordie Maguire got the Pats back within one with his second of the night on the powerplay on a beautiful pass from Dmitry Sinitsyn at 4:39. Adam Brooks got the second assist and it was 3-2 Swift Current. The Broncos restored the 2 goal lead with a powerplay goal of their own as Connor Sanvido finished a loose puck for his first from Brycen Martin and Colby Cave at 9:30 and it was 4-2. Then Zack Mackay made it 5-2 at the 17:42 as he got his first from Julius Honka and goaltender Landow Bow. The Broncos outshot the Pats 14-6 in the second and overall we were tied at 18's. The Pats 1 for 7 on the powerplay to that point while the Broncos were 2 of 4.
In the third the Pats replaced Dawson MacAuley in goal with Teagan Sacher. The Broncos made it 6-2, 59 seconds in as Dillon Heatherington finished a beautiful pass from Colby Cave. Coda Gordon the second asssit. Then at 2:25 Swift Current extended the lead to 7-2 as Julius Honka got his first of the year from Glenn Gawdin and it was 7-2. Thats was your final.
The Pats outshot Swift 9-6 in the third and 27-24 overall. The Blue and White were 1 for 9 on the powerplay and 3 for 5 on the penalty kill. The third star of the game was Pat forward Geordie Maguire who picked up 2 goals. The second star went to the Broncos Julius Honka who had a goal and two assists and the first star was Swift Currents Coda Gordon who also had a goal and two assists.
In the post game show Pats Head Coach Malcolm Cameron sais he loved the start for his team but that they got away from their game plan. He said they werent tough enough on this night and that they didnt get the saves they needed early when they were up 1-0. Cameron also said there would be lineup changes on Saturday for the rematch in Swift Current with a 7 o'clock puck drop on 620 CKRM.
